September Sapphires: The Birthstone of the Month is a New Classic for Nontraditional Brides

Historically, blue sapphires have been loaded with symbolism and meaning. Going back centuries, the gems have been known to represent nobility, sincerity, and faithfulness. Certainly, diamonds hold the top spot when it comes to "gem of choice" for traditional engagement rings, but we think it's fair to say that a certain Princess (and her daughter-in-law Kate Middleton) have cemented blue sapphires as the nontraditional bride's gem of choice. That oval blue sapphire ring with white diamond halo became known the world over when it was picked as an engagement ring by Lady Diana Spencer herself from the royal collection back in the early 1980s. It was a "controversial" selection for many reasons, chief among which was the fact that the design was for sale to the general public by the jeweler who originally designed it as a wedding gift for Queen Victoria. Royals typically had bridal jewelry custom made, and Lady Diana was often side-eyed by the royals for not opting for a rare or one-of-a-kind ring.

Needless to say that sort of "rebel spirit" would go on to be captured by many future brides who, inspired by "The People's Princess," would order versions of the the famous ring for their own engagements. In fact, Dana Walden was commissioned to create London, shown below (center) shortly after William proposed to Kate using his mother's famous ring.

In a way, by choosing the Ceylon sapphire ring all those years ago, Princess Diana threw up the proverbial middle finger to conventional norms, merging the worlds of old royalty & fairy tales with a modern representation of her place in royal history; as well all know, Diana's marriage wasn't ideal, but her choice of a ring has come to represent her independent spirit and the popularity of sapphire designs have only grown in popularity since.

Blue sapphires are believed to protect their wearers from "the evil eye" or envy and any harm that may result thereof. They're believed to attract spiritual insight and good fortune, while aiding in clear communication. The gem is a symbol of strength, kindess, and power.

Natural sapphires- rated 2nd only to diamonds on the Mohs Scale of Hardness- come in many, many shades (including now-popular  Pink Padparadsha sapphires and teal sapphires), but generally sapphires are mostly associated with the deep, classic blue hue shown in the designs featured on this page.
