What is a Diamond?

Since you're in the market for a diamond engagement ring, let's start with the basics. What exactly is a diamond?

A diamond is essentially crystalized carbon. It is the only gem in the mineral kingdom that is made of a single element, at approximately 99.95% carbon.

These extraordinary gems have the same chemical make-up as the graphite in your pencil, but when in crystal form, diamonds take on the desirable qualities that we treasure. They are formed under extremely high temperature and pressure conditions that exist about 100 miles beneath the surface of the earth. Diamonds also have an isometric crystal  structure (the carbon atoms are bonded the same way in all directions), making them extremely hard and durable.

This special combination of chemical composition, crystal structure, and formation process gives diamonds the qualities that make them extraordinary. Now that you've acquired a better understanding of diamonds, you're one step closer to selecting the perfect diamond to symbolize your union!

At Dana Walden Bridal, we've streamlined the diamond selecting process by pre-screening the finest conflict-free diamonds for you to view at our NYC studio.
